Molecular genetics is a one semester college level introductory course offered in the Spring focusing on DNA manipulation and technology. You will learn by doing since most of the course time is spent in the laboratory. You will review DNA and its functions and learn about the history of DNA science along with how to extract DNA from organisms and the use of the digital micropipette and the electrophoresis apparatus to separate DNA fragments in a gel. You will learn how to cut DNA with restriction enzymes; amplify specific genes on your own chromosomes and analyze and sequence your mitochondria DNA (maternally inherited). You will transfer genes between organisms and add new traits to E. coli cells they do not have in nature. We will also examine the role of DNA in forensics, learning how to do a DNA fingerprint or profile; pharmacology; agriculture and food production.
Many of my former students have gone on to fields related to microbiology and molecular genetics including medicine, health, forensics, research and education. Some have even become my colleagues.
